On 2008 February 8 Friday, eighteen men and one woman arrived at Ducie Island. During the next three weeks, operating as VP6DX, this team set many new DXpedition records. Here follows the story of one GMT day in the life of this DXpedition: February 17.

The seeds of the DXpedition to Rwanda were sown a long time ago, in mid 2006, when we returned home from our Western Sahara effort. Many emails went back and forth between me, Tony Gonzalez (EA5RM) and others talking about possibilities for our next trip. We chose to go to Rwanda.

Two years ago we tried to find a place for another “holiday expedition”. After a few weeks of selecting we prefer Mauritania. It is a sunny area, closed to Europe and only a few miles crossing the Atlantic Ocean to Stateside.
Guyana 2008

Jim, G3RTE and I first started planning our latest DX-pedition in 2004. The major obstacle was getting the licence. Back then, my first point of contact was by e-mail with Peter Denny, 8R1WD who was at the time (and still is) the President of the Guyana Amateur Radio Association (GARA). Peter readily agreed to help me and I duly sent to him copies of my UK licence, passport photo page and a covering letter addressed to the Director of the Guyanan licensing authority, the National Frequency Management Unit (NFMU). Strangely, even though Guyana is a member of the British Commonwealth, it transpired that the NFMU do not recognise a UK Class A licence as being valid, despite the fact that the local exams are based upon the old City & Guilds syllabus! Shortly after I made the application, I received an e-mail from the Director of the NFMU stating their official position was that they would only accept a licence issued in either Trinidad or the USA. We decided to shelve the project at that time and went to the British Virgin Islands as VP2V/G6AY that year instead.

It was back in March 2007 when my son Michal, OM2DX, came to me with the idea of going somewhere for an expedition. Not a bad idea, but to be honest I was pretty skeptical because finding an interesting country which is affordable and at the same time at least a bit rare is almost impossible but I didn't want to disappoint him. So we started browsing through DXCC list. The pacific was canceled in the first round. In second round, we stopped thinking of South and North America. There were a few interesting destinations in Africa but we didn't like it that much as well. And we didn't even think about Europe. So what was left? Asia; the continent with quite a few rare destinations. Sometimes, even with a few local hams that exist in those countries, but they haven't been visited often by expeditions (A4, A7, A9, AP, ...). "What about Palestine?" asked Michal. "Forget about it" I replied. But he didn't.
V8 Brunei

From the 4th till 19th November we (Flo F5CWU, Tom GM4FDM and Ronald PA3EWP) were active from the semi rare DXCC country Brunei. Most of the DX-ers already worked Brunei on many bands and modes. But after some investigation we notice that Brunei was not much activated on the low bands and in RTTY in the last years. We thought this was a good opportunity to focus on the low bands and RTTY.
